Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery is proud to present the still life series of Jay Senetchko.

Although born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta Jay Senetchko has become a prominent figure amongst Vancouver painters. This may be due to his long history of teaching art at Vancouver Film School or his role in artists' collective Phantoms in the Front Yard. Primarily self taught, Senetchko's work focusing predominantly in figurative painting can now be found in galleries throughout Canada and the United Kingdom.

Still is a recently completed series of Still Life by Senetchko. Though each object is at first seen as mundane and inanimate, their warm glow and rich textures suggest much more. The subject of each piece stands as a monument symbolizing a moment in the artist's life.

Paired with the hyperrealist acrylic works of Jason de Graaf and the whimsical collage pieces of Patrick LoCicero, Still exhibits the classic Still Life vanitas in contemporary day. Like many of the great Still Life artworks that have come before, this exhibition explores the narrative or meaning within the common object. Considered extensively and deeply enough, Senetchko notes that "...these objects start to 'speak' and belie their simplicity. It is the depth of these objects in which their stillness acquires life."

The exhibition will be on view at Jacana Contemporary Gallery, 2435 Granville Street.

Hours are 10am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday and 12pm to 5pm on Sunday.

Title: " Felix Plays Lady Liberty"

A recent completed commission for a client originally from Germany that had a unique and personal relationship with the image of Felix the Cat. Felix is on a back drop of collage imagery from antique books of German expressionism. He is standing on vintage photos of Berlin before the wall. Felix is holding up an old lantern mimicking the Statue of Liberty. He also has his very own leather collar which lives in an antique cigar box.

My upcoming exhibition at The Linda Hodges Gallery is made up of my most recent large scale collage paintings of botanicals interpreted through the use of cut outs from vintage ephemera. Hidden faces, fish, toys, architecture, and art historical references make up the forms and shapes of the foliage. The back grounds are highly patterned with implied textures and the peices are rich in tone. The exhibition runs through the month of March.
